Flood Protection Products for your home

by Jackie Porter on 14 November, 2023

(other types are available! Plenty on offer if you google this! )

I attended an Emergency Planning briefing this evening. It is very relevant because, as ground water is rising, rain is falling and rivers are filling, the threat of flooding soon seems very real again.

The responsibilities are laid out in the Civil Contingencies Act 2004

In a crisis, we often expect the Council to ‘do something’. But we as householders, whether we own or rent, ae expected to take some responsibility for our own homes.

It is clear that Hampshire County Council will only issue sandbags if the risk is to your property (not your land) from water flooding from the highway.

They do not have any other responsibility to provide sandbags.

So if you are concerned about groundwater, you might like to consider a pump, or if you are concerned by flooding into your property from a river or from your own land, then you might like to be prepared with your own flood defences,. Below are some examples.

If you cannot afford them yourself, there are grants, or you can seek advice.

The flood barriers can be all shapes and sizes but if you ‘google’ Flood Protection Products for your homes, there is an enormous range for purchase, and unlike sandbags, some of these can be used time after time, and are clean and easy to store.

This Fence holds back the water: it is usually employed by councils, but it could be a good purchase for a parish perhaps?

A Flood Fence, Flash Flood barrier- modules of 1m long, around £130 each.

And a flexible style barrier…

A flood sack with polymer filling…not sand bagged but similar in use.

Lots of non-sand bag systems here, including barriers which, filled with water, provide protection

Do you have a good idea to prevent flooding? Design 1st welcomes new ideas!

Also  from JJCarter: an ecodam:  which could be useful to divert flow too.

We used a similar system in Headbourne Worthy in 2014.

J&JCarter is very local, baaed in Andover

We used one of these in Headbourne Worthy in 2014. It was useful to divert rainwater flooding away from the home

UK companies can provide covers for air bricks, doors etc. too

You may need a pump. This one is industrial but would be perfect if your home is flooding from below ground.

If you find any more items of use, please share with us all: neighbours and friends!

If you are taking care of your community and are already in a Flood Action Group …. Thank you!
