Building Regs System is broken- Lib Dems insist: we need more accountability

by Jackie Porter on 17 May, 2018

On so many occasions, I have said that the Building Regulations system doesn’t work now.
It used to: developers of buildings paid a fee as part of their Planning application to cover the cost of the Local authority Building Reg Officer Requirements and subsequent visits to check the work done.

But then the regulatory system changed which allowed developers to choose their own approving authority- and a new industry set up, often linked to specific developers.
It’s difficult for an individual to argue against these companies, and has resulted in some disastrous decisions in my own division- often linked to sewage systems!

The wall has been placed either side of the lamp post! Great building eh?

So I am pleased that the Lib Dems are saying that it’s time that theGovt acted on building regulations
Responding to the publication of Dame Judith Hackitt’s final report on the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety, Liberal Democrat Housing spokesperson Wera Hobhouse said:

“It is time for the Government to act. Ministers must now fully and swiftly implement the recommendations in Dame Hackitt’s report.

“The current building regulation system is completely broken. There is a fundamental lack of accountability and enforcement within building regulations. This must be tackled if we are to witness real change in building safety.

“For proper accountability, the Government must ensure that there is a named qualified individual responsible for signing off on the safety of high rise buildings.

“The time when builders and developers can simply specify and sign off their own work must come to an end.”
