Supporting healthier lifestyle choices, making it safer and pleasanter for all.

There are two phases. Phase 1 is easier to achieve, feasibility for phase 2 into the Worthys is part of the funding approval, and plan, but there is no finance for this construction work allocated as yet.

More details on the link above

The Phase 1 construction of the Worthy Road Active Travel scheme

Hampshire County Council has appointed Mildren Construction Ltd to carry out improvement works on B3047 Worthy Road between Dyson Drive and Stoke Road. The works will also occur at the Dyson Drive junction and the Stoke Road junction. Construction works expected to start on 21 October 2024 and approximate completion early Spring 2025.  The site compound for welfare facilities will be located the section of the green between Dyson Drive / Francis Gardens. The site will be re-instated after the completion of the works. Please see the location plan of the site compound.

Scheme improvements include;

  • New Parallel Crossing: for people that walk and cycle is being added just south of the Stoke Road junction.
  • Wider Footpaths: The footpath on the east side of Worthy Road will be widened for approximately 200 meters between Dyson Drive and Stoke Road, providing more space for people that walk and cycle. This will be achieved by reducing the road width.
  • Stoke Road Junction with Worthy Road: to make the entrance (bellmouth) smaller at Stoke Road which would help slow down traffic. Additionally, a new continuous crossing further down Stoke Road will be implemented to make it easier and safer for people to cross the road.
  • Dyson Drive Junction with Worthy Road: The entrance here will also be narrowed. Additionally, a new continuous footpath will be added to give priority to people that walk and cycle. This path will extend into Dyson Drive, making it easier for people heading towards the low traffic routes to the city centre.
  • Bus Stop Access: The footpath near the north-bound bus stop will be widened by 0.5 meters over a stretch of 50 meters, along with improvements to the existing uncontrolled crossing near Dyson Drive.
  • Improved Visibility: modifications to a historic flint wall will enhance visibility for people that walk and cycle, making it easier for them to see and be seen by drivers.
  • Other Works: Resurfacing works, upgrading streetlights, improving drainage, and landscaping.

Please see the Phase 1 location and overview drawing plan (Microsoft Sway) displaying the final confirmed scheme.  Please see the public notice for the raised tables (traffic calming measure designed to slow down vehicles).

Hampshire County Council formally approved to implement this scheme on Decision Day 9 September 2024  Please view the Decision Report. Worthy Road Active Travel Phase 2

Phase 2 of the Worthy Road Active Travel scheme aims to improve pedestrian and cycle provisions along the entire Worthy Road corridor, from the City Centre to Kings Worthy. This phase has been developed alongside Phase 1 and is nearing the completion of its preliminary design. However, due to a lack of funding, no further work will be undertaken beyond this stage.

Should funding become available, it is unlikely to be sufficient to complete Phase 2 in its entirety. The design process has identified several issues along the corridor, including construction costs, highway structures and potential traffic restrictions. Therefore, if funding is secured, prioritisation will be necessary to determine which aspects of Phase 2 offer the best value for money and are most feasible to deliver.

The City of Winchester draft Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) identified and prioritised the B3047 Worthy Road between The Worthys and Abbotts Barton as a route that could be made more inclusive for all by making it safer and more attractive to travel along. More information on the draft LCWIP.
