Walk to School Week May 15th to 19th

by Jackie Porter on 14 May, 2017

Healthy active children – that’s what I want to see in every school -and walking to school can contribute to that.

Are you walking to school this week?
Will you do it for a week, then go back to old habits?
Will you just do the walk on fine days?
Or will you embrace the opportunity to share a few moments with your child(ren) on their way to and from school every day, whatever the weather?

I have been helping on the Walking Bus at Kings Worthy for several years now.
It’s a simple concept: a few volunteers help more than a few children get to school by walking as a ‘bus’. For us, it’s easy- after we managed to secure a path across Aversely Park, parents drop off in the Recreation Ground and we walk across the park (sometimes via the playground!) onto the brand new path built by HCC to the primary school.

In the 2016 year, I secured a large sum of funding to upgrade the path alongside the school to widen the tarmacced surface along its full length. Only by providing paths suitable for parents, school children and their siblings, will we be able to take away barriers to walking.
But for the children with a playground along the way too- what a joy it is to see so many children walking to school!
