20’s plenty? How could it work where you live?

by Jackie Porter on 28 October, 2013

There are villages where most drivers realise that the safe speed to drive should be a meximum of 20mph. Sensible drivers judge conditions and drive accordingly.
Cyclists often don’t consider themselves needing a speed limit- but they most definitely need to be on board with the 20’s plenty for us campaign.

The snail image looks attractive, but only a 20mph limit holds any sway in a court of law.

The Government’s Lib Dem Transport Minister at the time, Norman Baker, offered ways for Councils to deliver 20mph where residents wanted 20mph without a plethora of signs to change the character of the village.
I put forward Micheldever for the pilot scheme and I know that Easton, Crawley and Sparsholt were interested too.

But, despite a fan fare of interest at HCC, I don’t think that the plan has got much further in the villages.Nothing more has happened.
Despite a lot of discussion, Hampshire hasn’t taken up the challenge of 20mph in villages.
