The Weeke and Harestock Community plan

by Jackie Porter on 6 August, 2013

We met last week to look at the start of the Community Planning exercise for Weeke and Harestock.
Pat Maier has done a great job, bringing the community plan to the booklet stage- now it needs the community to get behind the team to ensure it delivers results.

The 35 points in the Plan come from years of work in the community. We must find ways to deliver on this.

One key point is that the area has lots of pluses. It has wonderful green corridors which link Weeke and Harestock. But the Community feels that it needs community facilities. Ironically for a community with a Scout hut, Churches, a pub, and two parades of shops, the community facilities are spread out and don’t function well for the groups that use them. Although known as a popular local social club too, many people don’t even know where the Community Centre is!

With the help of WACA, (Winchester Area Community Action), the Community Forum now has to unpick the booklet of 35 ideas and find just a few to concentrate upon.
And we must persuade the Councils too, that it isn’t just a talking shop, but that it is given a budget of thousands so that the new group can achieve something useful for local residents.
