Morn Hill Camp Memorial Launch

by Jackie Porter on 11 February, 2012

Tony Dowland is a keen railway and military historian. He has researched the history of the Morn Hill Camp which was situated just outside Winchester during the First World war.
Acting as a transit point for troops before they went to France, it started as a tented camp, but over the years, buildings and a hospital were erected, and even a railway built!
Tony came to Cllr Robert Johnston and I because he thought that this momentous part of Winchester’s history should be recorded- and the fact that the troops of so many countries came through the camp, including Canadians and Americans.
We held a launch meeting at the Holiday Inn on Friday 10th February 2012, with the aim of creating a memorial by the 100th Anniversary of the start of the war in 2014.
Perhaps your family has memories of this site? Or you know more about it? Please contact the group via me.
Brigadier David Harrison has kindly agreed to lead the project, and we have had great interest from the MP and Dan Snow, the TV presenter, whose ancestor actually managed the camp for a while.
‘This is a fascinating piece of history of Winchester about which the public know very little’ said Brig. Harrison.
Jackie says’ It is significant that the population of Winchester was about 25,000 at the time when the camp of up to 50,000 was set up.
Without Tony’s research and persistence, this project might never have come to light. It is a really exciting project ‘
