Liberal Democrats secure vote on tax cut

by Jackie Porter on 18 May, 2022

The Liberal Democrats are putting pressure on Conservative MPs to back an emergency tax cut, after securing a vote on an amendment to the Queen’s Speech tonight in Parliament.

The Lib Dem amendment calls for VAT to be reduced from 20% to 17.5%, saving the average family £600.

Commenting ahead of the vote, Leader of the Liberal Democrats Ed Davey MP said:

“We have secured a vote tonight to slash VAT and save families money in the shops and at the fuel pump. Conservative MPs must seize this chance to vote for an emergency tax cut.

“We can’t wait a day longer to slash taxes and put money back into people’s pockets, the time to act is now. Families and pensioners will never forgive Conservative MPs if they refuse to back a tax cut.”
