Why are we expanding any of our airports in the South of England?

by Jackie Porter on 25 October, 2016

With the Tory imposed Brexit on us all, the drop of the £ against other currencies, and the likelihood of declining European markets, why do we want to increase the number of flights going in and out of London at all?

When all the talk of expansion started, Zac Goldsmith who was an environmentalist before he became a Conservative, encouraged us all to take ownership of ‘a little piece of England’ at Heathrow.
I claimed a patch as did many thousands of others.

So-what has happened to all the promises now Mr Goldsmith? Can I claim my land-and will there be an almighty struggle with lawyers to recreate the land parcel that you said was split into tiny lots?

Liberal Democrats strongly oppose the expansion of any airport in the south-east of England, specifically at Heathrow.

This has been our party position since 1997 and has featured in every manifesto since 2005, in addition to the 2005 policy paper ‘A Soft Landing: Creating a Sustainable Market in Aviation.’

At our behest, it was included in the Coalition Agreement.

Last week, I heard that a group of experts were trying to justify the impact of the airport because the cars driving to it would be cleaner in 20 years’ time!
Ridiculous!
The Radio 4 presenter blew it out of the water…
We all know that airports do not improve the soundscape of those living nearby, the air pollution, or the traffic congestion. Why is it going ahead?

Heathrow expansion is damaging to the environment, is detrimental to our principles on climate change and is unnecessarily disruptive to those living within the vicinity. We don’t want it-or need it.

Post Script– 4 hours later and Zac Goldsmith has resigned. Well at least he has struck to his principles- but Heathrow expansion is still going to happen under this Government isn’t it? But why???
