The Girl Generation: Together to end FGM

by Jackie Porter on 10 October, 2014

I am a keen supporter of the charity ROSA-a relatively new charity with a clear mission to support women and girls worldwide in their employment, against violence towards women, and in their voice in governance.

ROSA has reported:

The launch of The Girl Generation will take place on 10 October 2014 simultaneously with events for young people in Nairobi (Kenya), Banjul (The Gambia), and London (UK). The theme of all three events is ‘The Generation that Ends FGM’.

Recognising the role that the Southbank Centre has played in helping to shine light on the issue of FGM since the first WOW festival in 2011, the launch will celebrate the successful campaigning work that led to DFID’s historic investment in ending FGM in Africa and beyond. It will also look to the future, and ask how we can build further support for an end to FGM in Africa and beyond in one generation.

A panel discussion will take place with our own Lib Dem MP, Lynne Featherstone , Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for International Development; Jude Kelly OBE, Artistic Director of Southbank Centre and founder and director of WOW – Women of the World Festival; Sarah Sands, Editor of the London Evening Standard; Margaret Lesuuda, Education Counsellor at the Kenya High Commission, UK; and Nimco Ali of The Girl Generation, co-founder of Daughters of Eve, and anti-FGM campaigner.

Knowing that statistically it is estimated that 137000 girls were likely victims of FGM in 2011, I continue to ask how Hampshire is tackling this issue.
